Barclays Bank set up offices in India in the late 1970s. Our investment banking arm is a leading player in domestic Indian and international capital markets and offers a range of onshore and offshore financing operations via bond and loan markets. With 13 deals to the market since January 2005, Barclays is ranked number 1 in India for convertible bond issuance. In early 2006, we lead managed an international 10 year bond issue for NTPC, the first international issue from India since the Asian financial crisis. In 2007, Barclays launched a retail bank and a credit card business in India.
